There is so much romance that surrounds all things French. From pretty ephemera and textiles, perfectly aged rusted iron and lovely tarnished silver to gorgeous scrolled fonts, beautifully detailed designs and ornate architectural details.

Many of these pieces may seem “imperfect” to some, but to me, it is these imperfections that I look for when purchasing pieces. I love the aged, time worn look.

Each individual piece has it’s own history and when brought together they create the perfect blend of warmth, interest and elegance.

~My Interview with Vintageweave Interiors~

Each month I will be doing a Q & A interview with someone who inspires me. The interviews will be on Websites, Blogs & Boutique shops.

This months interview is with Kathy, the owner of Vintageweave Interiors. Kathy has an upscale boutique located in Los Angeles. She also has an online shop and a beautiful Blog.

(Kathy’s answers are in blue)

1) Do you remember when you first started being interested in design?

Absolutely! In grade school I started rearranging my bedroom, often moving my furniture much to my mother's chagrin! She'd hear movement and rumblings, and was aghast to walk in my room only to find I preferred the bed under the window! It's amazing how strong a little girl's legs are when used as leverage! I constantly made highly-decorated cardboard houses for my Barbie's, too. My Ken had the first hipster NY pad, complete with fake fur wallpaper made from dyed cotton balls!

2) Can you tell me when you started your Blog and a little bit about what made you decide to start it?

The blog began three years ago as a way to highlight our favorite items brought back on our frequent pilgrimages to France, as well as general treasure hunting around town. Because there are so many facets to Vintageweave in addition to the boutique and online store (gift baskets to the entertainment industry, consulting on set designs, private client design, etc), we also wanted a venue to let our customers and clients know what was going on with our multi-faceted business. Also, we are a mainly private-appointment boutique so writing on the blog and Facebook allows us to still keep in touch with the many who may only know us through online ordering. It was never set out to win awards or copy and paste all the beautiful inspirational pictures from other blogs or magazines; just an extension of the overall business. The beautiful, unexpected thing is that it has allowed us to have a more personal relationship with our regular clients stateside and abroad. We really have the best followers of this business and I love interacting with all these beautiful souls. {Note: In this age of instant gratification and an over-active workload, we're now a bit more focused on enjoying these connections through our business Facebook page.}

3) Did anyone specific influence you?

Both of my parents are highly creative. I remember in the 70's how everyone would marvel at the "chic" brown wall my parents painted as an accent. However, It ends in the home decor genes for me; they are highly talented and self-taught in landscape design, whereas my thumb is pretty brown. My father passed last year and he made me some Fleur de Lis burlap banners two years ago; it's one of the first things people comment on when entering the boutique. Since we didn't grow up with a lot of money, I was fortunate to be surrounded by out-of-the-box creativity out of necessity.

4) You are so talented, can you tell me about some of your interests?

Well since Vintageweave is a French Lifestyle store, I obviously have a serious passion for that part of the world. I've always been drawn to simple and natural decor found in farmhouses in the South of France. And I love splashes of French red! What many don't know about me is I'm also passionate about cooking. While I won't win awards, I have been am fortunate to have taken many cooking classes in Italy and France. Several years ago I was fortunate to have one of my designs {French Hemp Silverware Sleeve) purchased en masse by professional chef, Nigella Lawson. Out of that relationship she gave me a list of "must have's" to overhaul my gadgets; as a result my kitchen is the gathering spot for group cooking at frequent dinner parties. I love entertaining! My favorite present to myself on my birthday is to throw my own party where I can offer up every single detail of design! My boyfriend would tell you that I'm passionate about shoes, but what does a man who lives in Converse know!

5) Where are some of the places that you have been featured?

InStyle Home, Los Angeles Magazine, Bon Appetite, Gourmet Magazine, House Beautiful, Romantic Homes and Country Living, to name a few of my favorite shelter magazines. Also, many of Vintageweave's items were featured in several clients' homes in O at Home and Oprah.

6) What items are currently inspiring you?

Antique French postal bags for amazing, one-of-a-kind pillows and dog beds and I have a never-ending passion for antique and vintage French tea towels. I drool every time I run across them. Antique French Garden Chairs with scrolled arms offer a simplicity and romance that I love putting into my client's homes right now. While I adore some reproductions, there's nothing like an antique item where you can let your mind wander as to the family that sat around the old table, wiping their mouths with the vintage linens and sharing their day's events. If these items could speak ah the stories they would enliven us with...it's such a privilege to hold something in your hands that was once loved by another no longer on this earth.

7) Can you tell me what future projects you are working on and any new things that we can look forward to reading about on your Blog and Facebook?

I just started working on Sharon Osbourne's dressing room on the set of her new talk show so hope to share pictures as the design unfolds; procuring props for several set designers for four upcoming feature film and television shows; and a client has purchased her third Malibu, CA home in 2 years which I shall begin to tackle. Additionally, we have several magazine spreads coming out next year in Romantic Homes, California Magazine, Malibu Magazine and Los Angeles Magazine. We're in the infancy stages of starting our own home decor accessory line, too. If I wasn't running around like a headless chicken I would probably be watching old Cary Grant movies whilst eating cupcakes!

Vintage silver is so pretty and I love tarnished, aged pieces. To me the imperfections are what give each piece character and a sense of history. They are one of the easiest items to come across at thrift shops, flea markets and antique shops and are relatively inexpensive.

A pretty way to display silver pieces is to group them together as a collection or to display one larger piece, creating a beautiful focal point.

This incredible display caught my eye the second I walked in. Vintage birdcages hang from the branches, creating an instant and dramatic focal point!

The outdoor patio is filled with gorgeous urns waiting to be filled with beautiful flowers.

I had such a wonderful time photographing Rolling Greens and browsing through all of their stunning merchandise. I was so inspired by everything around me. There really is no place like it…

Architectural elements add so much interest to a room. They bring a history with them and make a space seem warmer with characteristics such as patinas, chipped and distressed surfaces and antique features.

~My Interview with The Graphics Fairy~

This months interview is with Karen Watson, owner of The Graphics Fairy. Karen has a gorgeous Blog with over 1,000 free vintage clip art images.

1) Can you tell me when you started your blog and a little about where you find your gorgeous images?

I started The Graphics Fairy in August of 2007. I find my images all over really, Antique Malls, auctions,
flea markets, library's, Ebay, used and rare book shops, some I even inherited my from family, and also
a lot of my friends are antique dealers and they often lend me things.

2) Do you remember what first made you want to collect ephemera?

I collect a lot of things actually, besides paper, but I think what I really like about the paper is that it's
almost like a little memory that has been frozen in time. Each piece has a story to tell, from the image
itself to the little written notes on the back, to the postage marks (on mailed pieces) to the wear and tear
and crease marks. I also love that there is an endless amount of variety, there is just so much to choose
from. And lastly from a practical stand point, it doesn't take up a huge amount of space to store!

3) Did anyone specific influence you?

Yes, definitely my Grandmother! She and my Grandfather had quite a large home and it was filled with antiques, the most marvelous things! I spent a lot of my weekends at their house and I would spend my
days going through her attics, and china cabinets and old trunks etc, all full of treasures. She would take
the time to sit with me and tell me the stories of the different pieces, and explain to me where the things
came from and how they were used. I was completely in awe of all of it, even as a young child. She even
had two dressers full of gorgeous antique German dolls in the basement, she gave me few of them and
I still have them today.

4) What are your favorite images/themes to collect?

Some of my favorite images include Birds, Eggs & Nests, anything French or European, Children,
Ladies, anything with beautiful Handwriting or Typography, and Advertisements like you find on the old Trade Cards, I also love old Religious pieces.

5) You recently opened your Etsy shop. What types of products are you selling?

That seems to change over time. I was mostly selling small vintage pieces for crafters to use, in the
beginning, but it takes a lot of time to find the really good stuff. Now I mostly sell newly made found
objects, like the enameled metal number tags that I sell, as well as some fun hardware type pieces and
metal tags. Also, I'm currently working on a line of digital downloads to be used in making DIY home
decor items, so hopefully that will be ready soon.

6) Can you tell me what future projects you are working on and any new things that we can look forward to with your website and Blog?

I'm working on adding some new pages to my blog. One that will provide some good sources for info on
Public Domain laws and copyright, as I get asked about that a lot. Another one will be a personal blog,
which I've never had before. I think it will be fun, but I'm not sure how much time I will have to put into it.
I'm also in negotiations with a friend to start an entirely new blog, that is completely different than what I do now, but I think it could be a very interesting topic to explore. We are going to give it a test run and see if it is a good fit for both of us first. So I can't say for sure yet if we will go public, but time will tell!

I love the soft, muted color tones of blues and greens. They have a warm, rich look and feel and they are so pretty!

Bringing in this color palette through photography and vintage accessories is a great way to add a pop of color to an otherwise neutral room.

~Dreaming of a Summer Cottage~

This master bedroom is so romantic… The white vaulted beamed ceiling and dark hardwood floors contrast beautifully. I love the sheer fabric that drapes in front of the bed and the minimal furnishings, which give this room a whimsical and flowy feel.

(left) Welcoming you in to this beach cottage is a gorgeous settee overflowing with pretty pillows. The beadboard and beach accessories add the perfect inviting touch! (right) I find this foyer so pretty. To some it may seem stark, but to me I look at the details like the vintage shutters, clapboard, beamed ceiling and the dark hardwood floors and I find it so charming…

This bedroom has a romantic old world feel. The re-use of an antique fireplace surround and mantle makes a gorgeous headboard and the color blends beautifully with the bedding. The white monogrammed pillows really add a nice pop. I also love the aged green antique door and the greenery from the topiaries. It’s just stunning!

(left) In this bedroom, the French doors open out onto a balcony overlooking the ocean. The sheer curtains give the room a bright and airy feel. (right) Soft blues, yellows, creams and green color tones make this living room a comfortable and cozy place to relax in. The distressed blue shutters are so pretty!

A simple, yet beautiful centerpiece. This shows that creating a vignette can be as simple as placing a glass vase filled with fresh roses and adding some seashells in the background.

I am always inspired when I come across old metal numbers, signs, vintage letterpress and text. I found an amazing mix of the old and new in my search this week on Etsy.

I love the vintage wood typeset and the old metal letter and number. You have to wonder about their history.

Then I came across the newer items that have their own vintage feel. You can find so many uses for all of these beautiful items.

~Inspired by an English Cottage~

This is a great example of early 1900’s English Cottage style architecture. Starting with the graceful peak at the top and moving down to the romantic balcony and then the step-down patio leading you in to the lush garden.

(left) The neutral palette of this bedroom is so warm and inviting. The rotunda style ceiling over the sitting area adds a gorgeous architectural touch to this already beautiful room. (right) This amazing oversized French clock face makes the perfect focal point to this outdoor space.

The colors in this room are so incredible! From the earthy wall color to the soothing blues, grays and brown tones of the furniture, beams, drapery and floors. This really is one of the most romantic and elegant bedrooms I have ever seen…

(left) A gorgeous Baroque mirror adds elegance to this beautiful powder room. (right) A stunning antique Swedish hutch is painted my favorite color. The heavy distressing adds even more character to it.

This bathroom is so pretty and feminine. The curves of the vintage tub are so beautiful. You can tell that this room and all of the furnishings were really well thought out.

(left) This is the sweetest cottage. It looks like it is right out of a story book. (right) I love this cottage kitchen. The vaulted beamed ceilings and such an expansive feeling to this already open space and the chandelier adds an elegant touch. I also love the contrast between the white walls and distressed cabinets, which blend beautifully with the wood beams, floors and butcher block top.

The aged brick, which was laid in a herringbone pattern, is such a great look for a courtyard or patio. Adding the whimsical arbor which is draped with pretty wisteria and the iron chairs and table, make this the perfect outdoor dining room…

~DIY Terrarium~

I know there are many steps to this project, but don’t let that intimidate you. This is an easy, inexpensive and really creative way to make your own beautiful terrarium.

Step 1

Remove the backs and glass from eight picture frames (four 5" x 7", two 8" x 10", and two 11" x 14"). Lightly sand each frame's surface. You can find these for less than $1.00 at a garage sale.

(left) Step 2: Align an 11" x 14" with an 8" x 10" frame as shown. Drill one hole near the top and one near the bottom, through the larger frame and halfway into the smaller; screw together. (The screws you use should correspond with your drill bit. We suggest a 3/32" bit and #6 x ½" wood screws.) Repeat with other 11" x 14" and 8" x 10" frames.

(right) Step 3: Arrange the two L's you've created as shown. Attach them to each other using the same method described in Step 2 to form the terrarium's base.

(left) Step 4: Place two 5" x 7" frames facedown. Align a 2" mending plate at each end of the frames, as shown. Drill pilot holes and secure with screws. Repeat with the two remaining frames.

(right) Step 5: Align the two sets of 5" x 7" frames as shown. Attach a corner bracket inside each end of the eave, using the method described in Step 4.

(left) Step 6: Line the resulting roof up with the base, as shown. Place two 1" utility hinges, spaced evenly apart, over the joint where the pieces meet. Drill holes and screw together.

(right) Step 7: Trace the inside of an eave on paper. Cut out, and trace the resulting triangle onto a piece of ½"-thick plywood. Repeat; then cut the wood.

(left) Step 8: Fit the cut wood into each end of the roof. Attach by pre-drilling holes from the outside of the roof into the triangles and securing with screws.

(right) Step 9: Wearing gloves for safety, smooth wood filler over the terrarium's exterior, filling in the joints and covering the screw holes. Let dry for several hours; then lightly sand.

(left) Step 10: Paint the piece white. For a distressed finish, apply a dark furniture polish over the paint after it dries. Let sit for a few minutes; then buff off.

(right) Step 11: Replace the glass from the bottom up. Place hot glue in the corners of each frame, pop the pane in, and run glue around each frame's inside edge.

Step 12

Lift the terrarium's lid and place your favorite items inside. Some suggestions I have to make this more decorative would be to slightly distress it to make it look aged and paint it a gorgeous robins egg blue!

Some other ideas for terrariums…

You can be so creative with terrariums. You can use cloches, vintage bottles, wardian cases or cake stands with bell jars placed on top. Any glass item with an opening can be turned in to a beautiful display piece.

Also, remember that you don’t have to have a green thumb to enjoy a terrarium. You can place birds nests, seashells or any of your favorite collectables in them.

I love antique furniture and there is nothing more perfect to me, than mixing antique pieces with architectural salvaged items. With a signature collection of antique furniture, classic lighting, sumptuous textiles and beautiful accessories, Pom Pom Interiors offers a myriad of possibilities for gracious living that pleases all of the senses.

Growing up in Los Angeles, I have always been inspired by beautiful boutiques. Pom Pom Interiors is by far, one of the most inspiring and upscale boutiques around. Their assortment of high-end antiques, architectural elements and decorative accessories is incredible!

I love the mix of whimsical elements and antique furnishings. Those are the details that add warmth and interest to a room.

(left) It’s important to remember the small details as well, when creating a space. Pretty etched glassware adds instant beauty to any table setting. (right) Gorgeous artwork, statuary and lighting are abundant throughout the boutique.

This, to me is the ideal romantic space. The antique vanity has been painted a rich grey and has been lightly distressed to add an aged feel to it. I also love the oval shape of the ottoman and the contrast of the ivory upholstery against the darker tones of the vanity, table lamp and decorative accessories. The double mirror effect, with the large free standing mirror leaning against the wall and the smaller, more ornate mirror leaning against the vanity is so dramatic and elegant.

Nothing is more gorgeous and inexpensive as flowers. They add instant color and beauty to any room. I love how they look in these pretty mercury vases, stunning!

I love being outdoors on a warm, summer day, taking a walk and enjoying the beauty of nature. Seeing this statuary and the aged urns with overflowing greenery makes me long for summer… (right) A beautiful hutch with an open center and chicken wire doors at either end, make this the perfect piece to display all of your collectables in.

This antique settee has been upholstered with a soft, muted blue fabric. It brings in a cozy and relaxed feeling to this space, while the chandelier adds elegance.

(left) This mirror is one of the most ornate ones I have seen. The carved details throughout, are so intricate and beautiful. (right) What could be more pretty than a simple glass vase filled with some fresh picked pink roses?

I have a love for urns and this, by far is my favorite. The formality of the shape is so gorgeous and the distressing and coloring of it, make it perfect!

(left) Vintage watering cans hang out in the garden and add a whimsical touch. (right) This shows that you can create your own “French sidewalk cafe” even in a small space. A garden bench and small side table are all that you need to create the perfect place to sit down with a good book and a glass of wine.

What I find so pretty about this space is the balance of colors. The brown tones in the iron chandelier and tables, stand out against the creamy tones of the seating and armoire and make the crisp white color of the walls, sideboard and lamp really pop!

Another lovely vignette. Two mercury lamps and decorative accessories look gorgeous placed on this antique oval side table and the mercury glass reflects beautifully in the oversized mirror.

I love the simple lines of the iron bed frame and the curves in the antique French footstool and sofa, they are unbelievably gorgeous, but my favorite item that brings the whole room together is the armoire in the corner. The curved shape and carved details throughout the piece are so pretty and the color ties in with the rug and the upholstery, on both the footstool and sofa. This is a dream bedroom…

More beautiful mercury. It is another one of my favorites to collect…

You can picture this fountain in a courtyard of an old French Chateau. The rich look of patina and the still frame of the water spouting from the lions mouth is just gorgeous!

(left) A beautiful entrance in to one of the most beautiful boutiques you will ever step foot in. (right) For me, this picture represents simplicity. It shows that pretty, yet simple flower arrangements are equally as important in creating an inviting space as any piece of furniture is.

~My Interview with Sadie Olive~

Each month I will be doing a Q & A interview with someone who inspires me. The interviews will be on Websites, Blogs or Boutique shops.

This months interview is with Sara Duckett, the owner of Sadie Olive. Sara has an online boutique with gorgeous products to shop for. She also has a beautiful Blog, two Etsy shops and offers design services as well.

(Sara’s answers are in blue)

1) Can you tell me when you started your websites and a little bit about the products that you carry?

I started my online shop (sadieolive.com) back in March of 2007. At the time it was a part time venture while I worked full time in the mortgage industry.
It was only a few months later that the mortgage collapse hit, and I found myself without a full time job. The stress of needing more income forced me to get creative, and so I started designing blogs and websites as a way to bring in some extra income.
I have been doing design work for clients ever since.

In 2008 I also started dabbling in professional photography, and trying my hand at “people work”. Before then, I had always had an interest in photography but mainly focused on photographing still life. I am still honing those skills, but I feel I am getting better and better as the months fly by. My love for vintage décor and photography are what brought about my two Etsy shops. Warm Whispers, is where
I sell my online prints, and Sadie Olive is where I
sell my vintage finds (some of which has been used
as props for my photography). Both Etsy shops were opened in late 2009.

2) Do you remember when you first started collecting antiques? And the first piece that you purchased?

I think I had a few small odds and ends I acquired when I was younger, but the first purchase I can remember was an old shoe rack that my husband
and I picked for our first house together. We immediately saw the potential for the beautiful
worn wood to act as a wine rack and hold Josh’s extensive wine collection. I still have the old rack, although now it holds my vintage treasures in my master bedroom. It’s a favorite piece for sure.

3) Did anyone specific influence you?

I adore Elizabeth Maxon and her eye for “elegantly grungy” décor. She has always inspired me and sparked my interest in several of the collections I
have started for myself. Country Home Magazine
was also a favorite of mine for ideas and inspiration.

4) You are so multi-talented, can you tell me about some of your interests?

To be honest I feel like a hermit most days, working from home on never-ending projects for Sadie Olive.
I don’t get out to do much, but when I do, I love to shop, and take pictures, hunt for antiques, and hit the flea markets. We have a chocolate lab named Hannah, that we enjoy spending time with and taking for outings.

5) Where are some of the places that you have been featured?

My home has been featured in a few magazines. Romantic Homes, March 2008, Budget Decorating,
Fall 2008, and Dovetales, Fall 2008 and Fall 2009.
I have also had a few write ups in Artful Blogging, Winter 2008/2009 and Fall 2008. And I was named a “Top Romantic” by Romantic Homes Magazine
in February 2009.

6) What items are currently inspiring you?

Grungy vintage silverware, old wire baskets, natural linen, sun flare in photographs, white décor, Swedish antiques, and necklaces with old skeleton keys.

7) Can you tell me what future projects you are working on and any new things that we can look forward to, with your websites?

I don’t have anything major in the works right now, but I do get out shopping at least once a week and
add new items to my Etsy shop often.

~Sharing some warmth on this cold day~

This foyer is gorgeous! I love the architectural section of this 19th-century Gothic wall panel. It adds such a decorative element to this entry. You can be so creative with salvaged relics from the past and incorporate them in to your home beautifully…

(left) Pretty upholstered furniture, a gilded French mirror, antique chest and floor to ceiling drapery add the perfect blend of warm, rich elements to this living room. (right) The showstopper in this room is the 14-foot-high arched window and door. It is definitely the main focal point of the room.

This Italian, carved marble mantelpiece adds such elegance, yet the neutral color tone still makes this room feel inviting and cozy. The artwork and decorative accessories are just stunning.

(left) I love the silver-leaf Napoleon III mirror that hangs over the stove and the bronze chandelier. The kitchen is where we spend the majority of our time, so it too should feel elegant and romantic. (right) I have always loved the vintage look of farmhouse sinks. They are so pretty!

This gorgeous antique oak cabinet was originally made for a French store, but is the perfect piece to display beautiful collectables in.

(left) The colors in this bathroom are so warm and I love the arched window and shutter. To me there is something so charming about shutters. (right) I have a thing for vintage mirrors. I love to collect them, especially the ones that have the lovely etchings on them, as this one does. The way this homeowner hung it above the pedestal sink is so pretty!

This dining room has such a vintage feel. The built-in wall cabinet is amazing! The warm color it has been painted, a long with the distressed look it has been given and the chicken wire on the doors is absolutely gorgeous…

(left) This pool and pergola look like they are right out of a French Chateau. The deep blue water and the crisp greenery, make this a place you could enjoy all day… (right) The look of this outdoor space is so inviting and looks like the side of an old villa in France. The stone terrace, upholstered furniture, wall sconce, hint of brick and the greenery add to the charm of this beautiful space.

~New Pieces that I have been working on~

I have received many requests for my designs to be turned in to wall art. All of the products in my Collection are silk screened, so I wasn’t sure how that would work, but I decided to give it a try…

I started out be cutting a 13” x 15” piece of wood and than added many layers of paint in neutral color tones. When the paint was dry, I took the piece over to my silk screen machine.

Once the ink was dry, I lightly sanded the entire piece, giving it an aged and weathered look. You can either hang these as wall art or display them on an easel or shelf.

I have only pictured two of my designs in this post, but they will be available in many many more of my designs.

They will be available to purchase in my Etsy shop as soon as I finish some more pieces next week.

While searching for market totes, I stumbled upon Aimee Boschet's Garden Adornments. The totes were exactly what I was looking for, but the more I looked around on the site, the more I liked her other designs too...

Aimee told The Love List that she has “always loved French style. There is something so elegant about the craftsmanship in French furnishings." She also shared with us how affordable it can be to incorporate French style in your home. "Great style does not have to be expensive. Some of my favorite finds have been purchased at thrift shops and auctions."

Her collection of home accessories is très magnifque! The bold black printing against the soft, pale colors of the pillows is simple but chic. Aimee opened her online Home & Garden Boutique 3 years ago, and last May had the idea for her French Collection. "It started with one pillow ," she said, "and has now turned in to an entire home accessory Collection, which I sell retail as well as wholesale nationwide. It is very important to me that each of my pieces are handmade, well designed and affordable."

These Paris Inspired Apothecary Jars caught my eye. What better way is there to keep your favorite colorful candy in the kitchen?

It's shown here carrying flowers, but this durable canvas bucket tote can double as magazine storage.

When asked what her favorite items were, she confessed,"I really have three favorites. ~Architectural Elegance~ My Etsy pics of the week…

I love the scrolled elegance of the fleur-de-lis. Fleur-de-lis means "lily flower”.

It’s rich history is just as beautiful as the design itself. It is specifically associated with the French and has been used not only as a decorative element, but also in royalty, political, dynastic, artistic, ornament, emblematic and symbolic, especially in heraldry. It is said that decorative ornaments that resemble the fleur-de-lis have appeared in artwork from the earliest human civilizations.

The gorgeous details are so pretty and feminine in some pieces, yet very strong and stately in others.

As you can see from the items that I have chosen this week, the fleur-de-lis is seen in architectural elements, jewelry and home accessories. It’s curved lines and simple shape is something that is easily incorporated in to so many beautiful items…
